I have been organizing all the photographs I have of my work... years and years worth - from the pre-digital days. I am scanning them and uploading them into computer files. A lot of work. I came across this one. It is a private commission I did several years ago. I haven't seen it in a while... and still like it. I guess that 's a good thing. Thought you might like to see it, too.

nolemretaw/watermelon
Purchase Information
This little painting had me cross-eyed by the time I was done with it. As part of this week's online painting challenge, I had to paint a photograph of watermelon slices. The watermelon slices were placed on a mirror and then reflected again in the metal bowl. Tricky? Right? Well, it got even trickier... the photograph I painted from was upside down! Now you get why I was cross-eyed and you might understand the title! Great fun and a whole new perspective on painting a still life.

I get the sense that all is right with the world when I see a parent sharing what they love with their child. I love how tenderly this mom is showing her daughter the great big, beautiful ocean. I sense a bit of caution, too. Do you? SOLD

This is a larger painting on display at Chrysalis Gallery in Southampton, NY. The subject is so familiar to me, most likely because this is exactly how I walk the beach... hunched over in search of treasure.

Mama's Girls

I met with this woman and her two daughters at their home in Sag Harbor, NY. Their house sits on a bluff overlooking the harbor. Just as the sun was setting, I sat them in the grass near the edge of the bluff. The warmth of the sun on the grass reflected on their summer dresses and the radiant blue of the watery backdrop made it all picture perfect. Even better, this was a surprise for the girls' daddy. Could it get any sweeter?

Have you ever walked by a house and wished you could just go in and have a peek? Maybe stay for a while and have a cup of tea with the wonderful family that must live inside? Well, that's pretty much the feeling I get anytime I walk down a street in Sag Harbor. The houses are all so sweet you can almost taste them. SOLD

A Look Inside My Studio
Thought you might like to see how I set up for "Balanced Diet," the painting I posted yesterday. In the first photo you can see the balanced stack of cans on the right and the little painting on the easel.
In the second photo you can see my view of the stacked cans through the "view finder" that I cut out of cardboard and actually looked through when painting. It helps to cut the view finder to the same dimensions as the gessoed panel.
The final photo shows my true insanity. Check out how I had to rig this so as to get the still life set up high enough so that from my chair I would be looking up the stack of cans - the perspective I wanted! I spent that whole painting session anticipating an avalanche at any moment!

A Balanced Diet
SOLD
I was cleaning my food pantry - checking for outdated cans. I noticed that many of the labels were colorful and beautifully designed. It was at that moment, I recalled this week's online painting challenge... to create a still-life by balancing objects on top of each other. So, the outdated cans that should have been heading to the garbage headed up to my studio instead!

Two on a Tube
SOLD
Remember the days before boogie boards? Just looking at this I can feel the slippery wet rubber of the inner tube and the circular pull of the tide. Also remembering the annoying little valve where you put the air in...never failed to give you a good scrape behind your knee! Good times!!

Still in the Water
SOLD
I love the stillness of this scene. The reflection is mesmerizing - almost an optical illusion. It is also late in the boating season... hence the name!

This is the beautiful cedar tree that grows in my backyard. I painted it as part of this week's painting challenge - to paint a scene from outside your studio window. I have always wanted to paint this wonderful tree... so grateful I got the push! If you'd like to see the view from other artists' studios, check out this week's challenge at Daily Paint Works. SOLD
