Cut Lilacs in Glass

When you plop a bouquet of freshly cut, amazingly fragrant lilacs into a vase and get ready to paint it, the temptation is to start right in on the blooms. I have found though, that consideration of the leaves and branches is vital to the overall appeal of the composition and the subsequent success of the painting. The subtle turns and arched extensions of the greens are like the arms and legs of a modern dancer, it's where the yearning and maybe even the tension lay.

I was hesitant to paint these lilacs in this vase because of its turquoise handle and rim. Wasn't sure if the color turquoise would fight the lavender tones of the flowers. Actually, I knew in my gut it was a great color combination, but wondered if I could execute it effectively. Glad I trusted my gut and my abilities because I'm quite satisfied by the outcome.

I have begun a series of 8"x8" studies of all that spring has to offer. My aim is to capture each bloom as I see them and feel them. So I will be painting not so much from a botanical perspective, as from the absolute pleasure I feel when I touch, smell and drown my sensibilities in each flower. I do so wish that blogspot had a "scratch and sniff" widget!!

I received this beautiful little bouquet of lilacs from my friend, Lucy, last night. When I went up to bed, I put it on my nightstand so I could smell the sweetness while falling asleep. Then, today, when I still could not get enough of its gorgeousness, I painted it.
