Silverware Study

Purchase Information

This is a little study of the knife and fork I ultimately placed in the painting, 'Pottery and Silver' posted last week. I don't paint silverware very often and find it a bit daunting. Figuring a little practice might help, I put the bigger painting, 'Pottery and Silver,' on "hold" while I made this little study. It holds true again, "practice makes perfect" - or at least less imperfect!

Lone Lily

Purchase Information

Thank goodness for grocery store bought lilies. They are getting me through these bitter cold winter days when painting out of doors is out of the question. So, in my warm studio I sit and try to capture the beauty of these scented, sensuously shaped blooms.

Lilies in White Jug with Pears

Purchase Information

I am pleased with the movement of color around and across the white jug in this painting. I feel it  captures the sunlight as it bounces off the books, pears and tabletop. Painting "white" by putting color into it, is a total rush for me. There once was a time when I couldn't even see color in white, never mind paint it. It is wonderful to continue to advance in my ability to really see. Ironically, it comes at a time in my life when I have to wear glasses!

Scallions

Purchase Information

I think it was important that I indicated the table in the upper right corner of this painting. Otherwise, the plate and scallions would have appeared to be floating. I loved painting all the different greens in the stems and found getting the glossy sheen on the ends of the scallions, equally absorbing.

White Peonies and Vase

Purchase Information

First came the lilacs, and then, the peonies! You have to paint peonies swiftly because their blossoms are quick to open and even quicker to drop off.  In fact, I worked on the flowers first and the next day,  when I got back to finishing up the tea cup and silver creamer, all that remained of the peonies was a little heap of soft white petals.

Little Bit of Lilacs

Purchase Information

I have begun a series of 8"x8" studies of all that spring has to offer. My aim is to capture each bloom as I see them and feel them. So I will be painting not so much from a botanical perspective, as from the absolute pleasure I feel when I touch, smell and drown my sensibilities in each flower. I do so wish that blogspot had a "scratch and sniff" widget!!

Daffodils with Bottles

Purchase Information

I have a lovely crop of daffodils this year growing outside my front door. I swear that every time I walk by them I can hear them screaming, "paint me, paint me!" They certainly do make very cooperative subjects - heads held high, draped in bedazzling color and compliments to my blue bottles. The only downside to these yellow marvels is their short life span, just about two weeks. I am painting as fast as I can!

A Little Demitasse and Orchids

Purchase Information

I found a set of demitasse cups and saucers at a local thrift store. They are so sweet, and just the right size for my shadow box still life setups. I love the little glint of gold along the lip of the cup. So fun to paint.

Large Ceramic Pot with Sunflowers

I have been attempting to create two paintings from the same still life setup. I usually start with a smaller panel, 6"x6" and then go a bit bigger for the second painting, 8"x8". Here is the second, larger painting from the kitchen setup I did yesterday. You would think that because I worked out the colors and light and values in the smaller version, this one would almost paint itself. Not so much!  ;)

Half Measures

Purchase Information
This painting was as much about space and atmosphere and emptiness as it was about the the apples and the rose. I am loving the pursuit of these invisible entities and sensitivities in my paintings.

Old Firehouse

Purchase Information
After painting boats for the past couple of days, it was nice to paint something that stood still! This is Sag Harbor's original firehouse. Now longer used in its original capacity, the structure now serves as a museum containing lots of memorabilia from back in the day. At one time, the firehouse also held the town jail in its basement. You can see the door and window indicated on the left side of the building.

Waterfront

                                                  SOLD

I am just getting around to posting some of the paintings I did during a landscape painting workshop I took a few weeks ago. The instructor was artist Ben Fenske, a graduate of The Florence Academy of Art, and an avid landscape and portrait painter... not to mention an awesome guy. The first thing Fenske pointed out to me, was that my landscape paintings lacked depth. He was right. The painting above is one I did after a little instruction from the master. It's got some depth and atmosphere. I was pleased, and so was he!
