Getting ready for my summer art shows is getting me very excited to return to the beach - such a beautiful place to spend wonderful days with family and friends. I plan to take my paints and easel with me, too!

Fish Plate

                                               
So I guess this is a bit of a fish story, with pictures to go along with it. My daughter, Edwina, was home from college this week and we planned to paint together. She said she wanted to paint a fish. Here's where she is so great for me. I never would have thought to paint a fish. So, off to King Kullen I went to buy a fish with its head still on. Here's the fish... a porgy... and as the check-out girl remarked, a nice size one!

I wanted to share with my daughter one of my most trusted painting tools... my color charts as outlined by the great Richard Schmid in his book, Alla Prima : Everything I Know About Painting. Here's the fish with the charts... cobalt blue and tera rosa:

It is a very good thing that we set up outside. That porgy was not only a good size, he was also very stinky.

Delicate Orchid

When I was arranging this still life in my shadow box, I noticed how cautiously I set the pitcher and placed the orchid in the water. The reason for my steady movement was the absolute delicacy of both the fine glass and the dangling blossom. When I started painting, the awareness of their fragility stayed with me. I found that more than capturing shape and color, I was concerned with capturing that quiet essence.

I took myself out for a walk again. Nearly the end of February, and I was able to paint at the beach for hours in just a sweatshirt... unbelievable. I actually walked up the beach for a good 45 minutes before I found the perfect spot. I wanted to share with you my plein aire painting setup which has made getting out there so easy.  When I set up this still life, I was drawn to the interesting shadows cast by the light through the bottles. When I got painting, it was challenging to keep clear the subtle distinction between the bottles and their cast shadows. I'm  happy with the results .

Peggerty's Green Truck

This green truck filled with flowers is headed off to a beautiful home in Garden City, NY. My friend Peggerty commissioned me to paint it as a gift for her brother and sister-in-law. Green can be a tricky color for me, especially when it is in sun and shade as with this shiny truck.  So before I started, I mixed up a few color combinations so I could stay focused. My greens were made from cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, veridian green, cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium yellow light and  cadmium yellow medium.

I am really trying to get comfortable painting out of doors. I've decided to set myself up for success by keeping it simple and starting in my own backyard. This beautiful cedar tree is my latest inspiration.

This is a pair of boats I spotted tied up together just off the shore of Shelter Island. It was late in the day and the sun played so beautifully on their glistening white bows. I grabbed my camera and snapped a photo. So glad I did, because I am very happy with this little painting. I think I nailed the movement of the waves and the warmth of the sun and reflections on the boats. They almost look like an old married couple, don't they?
