Yellow Tulips in Metal Urn

These were very unruly tulip buds; so difficult to arrange. Finally, I just let them go and actually liked the way they scattered themselves in the metal urn. I think the free spirited buds juxtaposed with the upright, rigid container ultimately is what made this composition work.

I started this painting at high tide, but as you can see, by the time I finished it was low. This is a new way to gauge how long I've been out painting!

I worked from a photograph for this painting and for some reason, was having trouble determining the values. I think it was because the sky appeared "bright" in the photo but was actually "darker" than the skin tones and clothing. It was a feature on iPhoto that helped me get some clarity. I used the black and white "effect" to eliminate the color and that helped me...  get the picture!

Pink Carnations and Fruit

I was so happy with my still life setup from yesterday, that I decided to add to it, and go a bit larger. Usually I work pretty small, on 6 x6 inch panels. It was nice to have a little extra "elbow room" today. This is an 8 x 10 inch !

Farm in December

I am falling in love with painting outside, especially in winter. It is so quiet. I am finding that it's best to be out painting by 10 o'clock in the morning. That gives me steady light until around 2:30. During that span, the light changes, but subtly. Once 3 o'clock hits, the sun starts to take an ever-quickening nose dive into night. I now understand that old cowboy line,"move it along, we're burnin' daylight!"

 The paintings I admire most are ones that have been painted in natural light. There is a tenderness and a subtlety to the colors and values that I just love. It happens that wonderful north light floods my kitchen for most of the day, so I have started painting in my kitchen... and as long as I am not cooking, being in the kitchen is just fine with me!

Lilies in Blue

I am still working in north light and am loving it. I grabbed this bunch of white lilies from the grocery store and set them in a tall cobalt blue vase that I bought in Florida years and years ago. The combination made for a beautiful still life... and to add to the joy of painting such a vibrant arrangement, was the incredible sweet scent that went with it.
